Qualifications

Maureen Upton is an advisor to multinational corporations, financial institutions and global trade organizations. In her 34-year career she has advised management from C-suite executives to site personnel on projects spanning six continents, doing business in three languages. As sustainability advisor to the world’s largest gold mining companies, she authored comprehensive studies on the economic impacts of large-scale mining in key geographies including Tanzania and Peru, which were used in successful permitting negotiations. She has designed economic redevelopment strategies for both operators of major infrastructure facilities and The World Bank, supervised multicultural stakeholder engagement teams, and served as Expert Reviewer of an IFC-compliant voluntary resettlement plan for a mining project in Ecuador. In addition, Ms. Upton has over 12 years of public company board experience in investment management and the mining industry. She is currently host and producer of the Inside ESG Podcast.

    As lead consultant, managed team which developed business intelligence platform for sustainability performance management. Web-based SaaS tools revealed company performance against 100+ indicators for safety, environment, community, human rights and most metrics which comprise global ESG frameworks. Created data warehouse populated with multiple decades of company-wide, regional and site-level data, as well as data from other major producers for comparison. The platform included a live social media analytics component enabling stakeholder sentiment tracking. Platform offered the ability to improve sustainability outcomes with a feedback mechanism for stated goals.

    Created sustainable exploration framework for newly-formed global business unit. Worked with corporate, operations and site-level professionals to develop sustainable development approach, congruent with group-wide framework but tailored to exploration. Facilitated global offsite in Peru for sustainable development team from headquarters and all regions.

    The Equator Principles serve as a common baseline and risk management framework for financial institutions to identify, assess and manage environmental and social risks when financing large infrastructure and industrial projects. As Principal Consultant, conducted analysis of gaps between Rincon’s approach to preparation and reporting of environmental and social risk data for both construction and operating phases, and those used by Equator Principles Financial Institutions (EPFIs).

    World Gold Council, Conflict-Free Gold Standard

    Served on Working Group to develop first standard for gold industry to prevent gold mined in or transported through areas of armed conflict from reaching the supply chain. Engaged with numerous players in suppy chain including producers, refiners, jewelers and regulators.

    Lead Socioeconomic Expert for conceptual closure plan, working with in-country staff and in-region consultants. Conducted stakeholder engagement program throughout impacted communities, gathered and analyzed socioeconomic data, produced economic impact study and options for post-closure economic development.

    As Sustainability Advisor, led and authored comprehensive study of the effects of gold mining on the Tanzanian economy over the lifecycle of the entire large-scale gold mining industry. Gathered data from each mine on salaries, procurement, tax payments, training expense and other indicators.

    As Sustainability Advisor, conducted study of national and local effects of gold mining in Peru, including local supplier development and capacity building. Authored published report, interviewed small business owners and produced short documentary film, screened at World Bank and Lima Gold Symposium.

    Tanzania, South Africa, Ghana and Indonesia

    As Sustainability Advisor, led and authored comprehensive study of infectious disease incidence and management in gold mining communities. Studied factors contributing to HIV, TB and malaria incidence and mining company initiatives to prevent and manage infections among employees, contractors and community members. Held press conference with IFC Against AIDS, Global Fund for HIV, TB and Malaria and AMREF in New York for leading national publications.
